Volunteers are drawn to the Birch Island Woods area to work on projects that put a smile on Mom Nature’s face. The Picha Farm Potting Party in April prepares trees and shrubs that will be sold during the Birch Island Woods Plant Sale in May. The benefit helps raise funds to support conservation projects like buckthorn pulls and habitat restoration projects in the conservation area. The Friends assist, as needed, scout, church and school groups with conservation projects that have been authorized by the City’s Parks Manager.
Since the 1970s, area residents have picked up and removed roadside litter and trash. Friends of Birch Island Woods began organizing litter and trash pickups in 1999 including Eden Prairie’s Parks Clean Up Day held each year around Earth Day. In January 2008, the Friends officially “adopted” Indian Chief Road and Birch Island Road through the City of Eden Prairie’s Adopt-A-Street program. FBIW is committed to pick up litter along both streets that border the conservation area. For information on the “Adopt-A-Street call the city’s Street Maintenance office at 952-949-8533. |
