The candidates were asked the question: "Please describe in a few
paragraphs what you will do as a Council Member to help the City to acquire
and protect the Birch Island Woods" The following summarizes the
responses received:
| Mosman |
Feels the Birch Island Woods should be protected
in any way possible and that northern Eden Prairie's park needs have
been under-served. Places high value on the environmental, historic,
recreational and regional role of the BIW. |
| Butcher |
As a Council Member is actively supporting current
negotiations between the City and Hennepin County for preservation
of the County-owned portion of the Woods and succeeded gaining protection
and national recognition for the historic sites at the nearby Eden
Wood Camp. |
| Foote |
Feels strongly that the woods and its resources
need to be protected. Believes that the City needs to convince Hennepin
County that the BIW is a regional asset and to seek partnerships with
other entities. As former chair of the Planning Commission and Board,
he feels that he is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable
candidates about development and conservation issues and neighborhood
input. |
| Seymour |
Believes that Eden Prairians should have a strong
voice regarding the future of the Birch Island Woods. He will explore
all options to preserve the area because it is in the best interests
of the community and Hennepin County. |
| Murray |
Feels strongly that the woods should not be developed.
Appreciates the potential of the area as a natural area with trails
and likes Birch Island Road the way it is (mostly unpaved). |
| Thomsen |
Finds that protection of the woods would be in
harmony with his primary objectives of protecting property values
and investments and keeping city taxes in check. |
| Thompson |
Would seek private funding to protect this area. |
| Barrett |
Would do his best to make sure that the right
decisions are made on the Council to better Eden Prairie by protecting
the Birch Island Woods. |
