VOTE YES FOR EDEN PRAIRIE PARKS

WHAT, WHEN & WHY?
Eden Prairie’s $22.5 million Parks and Recreation Referendum on May 11, 2004 will provide critical help for a growing yet aging parks system that is challenged by increasing numbers of users. Your YES vote will keep Eden Prairie a vibrant community for residents and businesses.

WHAT WILL MY YES VOTE DO?
Community surveys and task forces have identified needs which will be helped by the referendum:

• TRAIL CONSTRUCTION: The system of trails which threads through our neighborhoods, parks and natural areas has gaps that need connecting and segments that need an overhaul.
• COMMUNITY CENTER COMPLEX: The hub of our youth and adult swimming, hockey, figure skating and fitness programs urgently needs a new roof, an ice making system and a deeper pool to comply with safety and competitive standards. A YES vote will provide needed locker & team room improvements; an indoor, walking/jogging track; an expanded fitness & weight area; a multi-purpose gym (basketball, aerobics); expanded concession and public meeting areas; new toddler, teen and parent areas and a third indoor, hockey, figure & recreational skating arena.
• A NEW OUTDOOR AQUATIC CENTER will provide families with safe, unpollutted summer fun with a “lazy river” for tubing, a zero-depth pool with water play structures and fountains, water slides, a 50-meter competitive pool and sunbathing, wet play & concession areas.
• MILLER PARK IMPROVEMENTS include a baseball complex with a grandstand and storeage, restroom and concession facilities for softball, soccer and football. FLYING CLOUD FIELDS will be expanded with new soccer-football-lacrosse and baseball fields with parking and traffic improvements.
• AN OPEN SPACE FUND will help acquire key parcels needed to complete our parks and trail systems within the Riley Creek, Purgatory Creek and Birch Island corridors.

WHAT WILL THE REFERENDUM COST MY FAMILY?
The estimated cost of the referendum for each family will be $2.17 / month for each $100,000 of home value - about the price of a single slice of pizza at the mall.

GOOD NEWS NOTES: 1) The low cost/high value return is prompted by EP’s large tax base. 2) The bonds will be paid off over 20 years. 3) Tax payers will not carry the full burden -- athletic and conservation groups will donate from $50,000 to more than $1,000,000 toward respective projects.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE YES:
Your YES vote is an investment in the future of your family and the value of your home, neighborhood and schools. A YES vote endorses a set of community values and amenities that will keep Eden Prairie the midwest’s premier places within which to live, work and do business.
